Mixing the Old With the New

Carrying the Vintage theme into the final day of the annual Del Mar Motorcycle weekend, Mike Kidd from Clear Channel Entertainment and Eddie Mulder arranged a treat for fans and racers alike.  Supporters of Mulders Vintage racing series who run in the 750 class were invited to join the Pros on the mile for two exhibition heats and one main event.  Their machinery and experience singing a sweet tune as they tore around the Del Mar cushion.  Eddie Mulder, riding a Jim Kelly tuned Vintage Harley Davidson XR750, christened the racetrack followed by 25 other vintage cycles to start the days practice sessions.  Triumphs, H-D's, Yamaha's and one BSA ridden by 68 year old Doug Douglas from San Bernardino, Ca. flew around the big mile, stretching their wings.  Many expired or broke as the challenge of the big track tested them beyond their limit.  Of the 30 or so entries, only 12 or 13 made it to the main event.  Triumph mounted Paul Herman won the exhibition with Mulder second and Ken Thiebaud on a borrowed H-D XR750 third.  In the Vintage pits, just outside of the Pro pit area, many of the young racers wandered about, admiring the custom machinery.  These powerful, Vintage "works-of -art,"  very unlike their own stock, look-a-like showroom models.  You see, re-living the glory-days of racing is what a big part of Del Mar is all about.  Not everyone trophied but the Del Mar Mile experience on your fast, old, beloved metal steed is reward in itself.
