Flat Track Association

Round #8 Perris, Calif.

Oct. 9th, 2004

Article  by Jamey Blunt

For the final championship round of the Southern California Flattrack Association, held at the famed Perris Raceway over one hundred  participants came through the pit gate. This night's race marks the end of the thirteenth season for this association in one form or another. Formerly titled San Diego Flattrack Association they have endured the losses of race tracks & turnover of high ranking club members, but still seem to emerge through it all and put a season together the best they can. Their new home this year is Perris Raceway, where Freddy Edwards has built them an oval. For the season finale double points were paid, and a $1,300 purse was posted for the pros. Perris known for the large rocks, saw three types of Wood show up for this event, but more on that later.

The "Youth Classes" continue to grow with a total count of twenty eight signing up. The largest being in the 50cc class of 17 riders, where Andre Ochs won a hard fought battle over the field to top Joel Roberts and Jack Bergstrom. Amanda Byrant pulled double duty to top both the 85cc and XR-100 main events in convincing style over Larry Smith 111 (in85cc) and Kyle Logan (in xr-100).

Mr.Ed's Joe Steffen has found some more speed, not that he ever was slow. He just seems to be a little faster as he too won both the "Vet" and "Bomber" main events. This is not to say he didn't have pressure, as Ron Wood Racing's Elliott Iverson hounded Steffen all the way in the vet class followed by Joel Kath. In the bomber main "The Legend" Ron Moore and Dave Johnson kept Steffen honest.

Bruce Reynolds was another double winner taking the "Vintage 250" and "Classic Vintage" races on his beautiful Bultacos. While Brad Holt Triumph mounted this time topped Dennis Voll (good to see him back) in the "Senior 50" class. For the "Super Senior" main, Ron Moore "The Living Legend" one of the fastest riders to ever throw a leg over a motorcycle beat out Roy Burris and Ralph Porzelt.

The strongest Wood found in Perris on this night came in the form of Jimmy, (cousins) Alex and Andy. Andy kicked things off looking better with every ride, winning the "Open Amateur" main aboard his Southland Honda. While the battle for the biggest chunk of the $1,300 was the "Pro Main" where Jimmy and Alex went at it, Jimmy one of the fastest dirt trackers to come out of the west was hounded by his cousin lap after lap. Jimmy like rare Mahogany stretched out his lead with every lap aboard his Ron Wood framed Honda. While Alex, improving at every race held a secure second over Joe Steffen, Joel Kath, and Elliott Iverson. Jimmy Wood leaves Perris not only with the biggest part of the purse, but also is the track record holder as well. I believe this brings his total of records to six. An end of the year Bar B Q and awards ceremony coming in January is planned according to Bruce Sanford.
