Southern California Flat Track Association
Race 11: Perris Raceway
Stacey Slams the Boys
By Rodney Rutherford
PERRIS, CA, November 13, 2010

Southern California Flat Track Association (SCFTA) has become a foundation of monthly sliding for the  Inland Empire, incorporating an excellent facility and strong turnouts. Despite their ever growing presence in the Flat Track world, SCFTA has not found a way to control the weather, and had to postpone a two round bonanza in Lakeside, California, the first of 2010 after rain poured down.

The weekend of November 13-14, became marked as a make up date for the two day event, seemingly appropriate as the year end event for the 2010 season. Since the opening of the new track the pits have been full along with enthusiast packing out the stands, and this evening was no exception. Seventeen classes, one-hundred and thirty-two entries, and twenty-three heats made for a full night of high speed Flat Track action, let's race.

Young Allison Stacey, is not fast for a girl, she is just fast and has been giving her competitors fits in 2010 with regular podium finishes. Stacey scrapped to a heat win in Youth 50-65cc by three seconds, then jumped off her bike and saddled up on another steed for the Youth 85cc plus, for another heat win. Stacey blew the doors off the field in the Youth 50-65cc Main, turning on the power to a demanding three second plus space by lap three over Perris regular Travis Petton. Behind Petton there was a battle brewing amongst Clayton Williams and Alyssa Flores. Stacey stayed in the clean air and increased her margin to four seconds by the end over Petton for the win, Petton second. Flores was busy on her way to the podium making a pass on Williams for third, Williams fourth, and Mike Ives second. Stacey set the track on fire in the Youth 85cc plus, tacking a two second gap by lap four as Kody Kesler fought to keep pace. Kesler had other issues though, as Logan Lee and Emmy Bush were bearing down. Bush beats down Lee on lap five and zeroed in on Kesler. Stacey on her lonesome in the front while Bush gets around Kesler. Stacey cruises in for an easy win, Kesler regains second, Bush third, Lee fourth, and Williams fifth. Stacy wins both of her classes for a dominating night of racing.

In the heat race, Allen McBee into the lead in the Classic Vintage 500-750, as Jeff Apple tucked in behind. Apple came on strong when the white flag appeared, but unable to catch McBee at the checkers, as McBee won and Apple placed second. McBee and Apple locked horns on lap three in the Main, Lenny Rodriguez sat off the pace but had his hands full in the inter-class race with Tom McMurren. McBee creeps away from Apple and blows through the checkers several bike lengths ahead of Apple for the win, as Apple assumes the second spot in the final results. Rodriguez shakes off McMurren for third in class and race. McMurren running in the Classic Vintage 250, threw everything he had at Rodriguez but was unable to get by. He placed fourth in race and first in class, second place in Classic Vintage 250 is Fred Berger.

The Vet 35+ class consisted of an "A" and "B" Main. The twelve racer "A" Main thundered around the speedy quarter mile with Jon Nunes attacking the pack and in the lead, Jim Rosa, 2010 AMA Superbike Champion Josh Hayes, and Netherlands racer Halbe Scheper fourth. With just a few hours of flat tracking experience, Hayes moved into second, racing closely with Nunes and charged into the lead around lap five. Nunes remain undeterred as the two skilled racers appeared to make contact, but kept their balance and Nunes busted back into first and held the position for the win. Riding like the Champion he is, Hayes is second, Rosa maintains third, Gary Williams fourth, and David Bush fifth.

A feisty James Wood was determined to keep Craig Johnson off the point in the Senior Vet 50+. The third loop and James Wood plan seems to be working, Wes Powell, Johnson in third and not his usual first spot, Jim Ottele fourth, and Richard Pollock fifth. Accustomed to first, Johnson turned on the screws barreling past Powell for second as he rockets for James Wood. James Wood sticks to his game reeling off the last two laps cleanly despite the pounding of Johnson's hooves and takes the win, Johnson in all his fury has to settle for second, Powell, Ottele, and Pollock closing out the top five. James Wood took early command  in the Vintage 250 2-Stroke Expert, Nick Armstrong was not impressed pushing past James Wood late on turn three. James Wood retaliated taking back the front for good and his second win of the night, Armstrong settles for second.

The Pro Main had a full board as twelve competitors lined up with Southland Racing Products racers Jimmy Wood and Kayl Kolkman the odds on favorites. A restart was required and Kolkman comes around turn one with Jimmy Wood in his shadow, Cycle World's Mark Cernicky third and Alex Wood fourth. Patiently stalking his prey, Rocket Exhaust racer Jimmy Wood covers Troy Lee Designs racer Kolkman like a wet glove waiting for his chance to pass. The leaders slipped away from the pack, Jimmy Wood finds his passing line and jets around Kolkman about lap five. Wood and Kolkman scream around the track encountering lappers along the way but stay true to the track.

At the half way point while in pursuit of Jimmy Wood, Kolkman cross ruts and hits the fluff on the outside driving himself into the wall on the back stretch. This incident forces the red flag out and a single file start, the top three racers at this point were Jimmy Wood, Cernicky, and Hayes despite another racer being placed in second in the file. Green light on, and Jimmy Wood goes back to checking out from the pack while Kolkman fires his way through the group after sitting at the back, restating himself back in second before the checks fly on the twenty lap event. Jimmy Wood gets the lions share of the cash, Kolkman, Cernicky with a steely ride third, Yamaha's Hayes taking to the discipline rather well fourth, and David Bush fifth. Jimmy Wood thanks Race Tech, Triple A RV, and Renegade Racing fuel.
