AMA Grand Nation history on the 1/2 mile dirt oval.

The ony AMA grand Nationl race completed on the 1/2 mile oval was July 1st, 1967. It was was won by
Bart Markel on a Harley Davidison KR.  Another Nation was  scheduled for August 1st, 1970  and practice was held,
but for some unclear reason, the race was cancelled before time trials. The  crowd got a little unruly and stole
Aggie's hat and and he was sprayed with a fire extingisher.  Not a good night.

It was common during this time period to hold professional TT races the Friday night before National races at San Jose
or Sacramento. Many of the national riders entered these events.

Jack Jones Sr. was a scrambles and flat track racer who won the number 1 Pro Blue Plate in AMA District 35 in the early Seventies.
Jones, who lived in Tulare, was killed
in an Ultra-lite accident.

The Dan Rouit Flat Track Museum in Clovis has a Van Teck Suzuki that Jones raced in the mid seventies.
Van Tech frames were made in the early to mid 70’s in Visalia, CA.
They were made for light weigh engines 50 to 250 cc’s.

The half mile track with its inside TT track was used until 1978. The track was then rebuilt
to a 3/8 mile banked clay ovel which is the present configuration.
